Who We Are

About Carmela Cares

Carmela Cares is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities, related neurodivergent disabilities, vulnerable populations, and families experiencing hardship with food access.

Rooted in the belief that the human–animal bond can transform lives, we provide programs that strengthen emotional well-being, promote independence, and help families remain whole.

Our Mission

To enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and families in crisis by providing food security, training and placing specialized service dogs, and coordinating therapy dog programs that bring comfort, purpose, stability, and connection to communities.

What We Do

Our Signature Programs

Three pillars of impact — each rooted in the transformative power of the human–animal bond.

🦴

Food Security Initiative

We source, store, and distribute pet food — and human food — to households experiencing financial hardship. By helping families keep their companion animals at home, we reduce shelter surrenders and support emotional stability across the Mid-Mon Valley.

🐾

Service Dog Training & Placement

We train and place primarily rescue dogs as service animals for individuals with autism, Alzheimer’s, and related neurodivergent disabilities — including temperament evaluation, specialized training, handler education, and long-term support.

❤️

Therapy Dog Network

Our therapy teams visit schools, senior facilities, hospitals, courtrooms, and airports. Launching literacy-focused programming in partnership with St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
